Welcome Aboard Sound Fun Charters!
"We Know Prince William Sound"
Sound Fun Charters is a family owned and operated Alaskan small business based out of the Port of Whittier.
Our specialty is fishing charters for halibut, silver (coho) salmon, lingcod, and rockfish. We offer half-day, full-day, and custom multi-day fishing and lodge packages.
Thank you to all our customers! Last year was such a terrific season and we met so many interesting people. Our customers in 2011 caught literally tons of fish (just like the year before)! We are now accepting 2012 reservations.
We are booking well into the summer. Please check our Calendar/Schedule page for current availability.
Sound Fun Charters made the Alaska NBC Affiliate, KTUU Channel 2, Alaska's Top Ten Summer Destinations on their GoToAk Project. Follow this link to my You Tube page to view their movie. Your host is staff meteorologist, Scott Elnes. Alaska's Top 10 Summer Destinations - The Video.

Just a one hour drive from Anchorage gets you aboard a new eco-friendly charter vessel; the M/V Sound Fun. She is a 2008 Hewescraft 26' Pacific Cruiser with a fully enclosed, heated cabin that comfortably seats 6 + 2 more in the cuddy (she is USCG rated for 12). In addition to lots of warm, dry space, we have a fully enclosed marine head (not a honey-bucket). If you would like to check-out the specs on our vessel, follow this link to the HewesCraft website. Come join us for breathtaking scenery and fishing that's second-to-none The Greater Whittier Chamber of Commerce asked me to provide a complimentary trip to promote our community and Scott Elnes of Alaska's Channel 2 News jumped at the opportunity. M/V Sound Fun got a makeover in 2010. We installed a new Garmin Hi-Definition radar/chartplotter/sonar system plus a Catagory 1 - 406 MHz EPIRB. We are one of the safest and best-equipped vessels in Prince William Sound.

Depending on the season and the trip/species you select, our travel to the best fishing grounds will be between 1/2 and 2-1/2 hours traveling through some of the most spectacular scenery on earth. Whales, puffins, sea lions, otter, glaciers, and untouched wilderness abound. Click here to see a video of orcas under the boat. If you are fishing for meat or out for the chance to catch a trophy fish, Whittier is the right destination. Regardless of your intention, a camera and pair of binoculars are highly recommended.
While traveling, don't be afraid to ask your captain questions like "where are we?" or "what is that?" We frequent Knight, Chenega, Bainbridge, Evans, Elrington, Latouche, Montague, Green, and Naked Islands, always staying in sight of land and the protected waters of Prince William Sound. You may see an Alaska ferry, cruise ships, commercial fishing vessels, and on occasion, an oil tanker headed in/out of the Port of Valdez.
We just don't get into the huge ocean swells that are common out of the other Southcentral ports; sea-sickness is rare. To give you an idea of the size of the Sound, it's 110 statute miles from Whittier to Cordova. Then 84 miles from Cordova to Valdez. From Valdez back to Whittier it's another 89 miles.
We are now accepting reservations for summer 2012. Check our "Calendar/Schedule" page for availability and call early to reserve your adventure.

Some things to consider when selecting a charter outfit:
Sound Fun Charters is licensed as a Fishing Guide and Operator with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. We are insured through Charter Lakes Marine Insurance, and we exceed the requirements of the US Coast Guard "Passenger Vessel Voluntary 5 Star Safety Program." Captain Roger is a seasoned mariner licensed through the US Coast Guard as Merchant Marine Officer. He is registered with the Federal Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), and is current first-aid/CPR trained.
There are many good fishing guides in Whittier. Whichever one you choose, make sure it has a Green and Yellow Fish and Game sticker on the side of the boat. Every vessel licensed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is issued one. It is vessel specific and let's you know that the guide is USCG qualified, licensed, and insured.
Sound Fun Charters is a member of the National Association of Charterboat Operators and the Greater Whittier Chamber of Commerce. We always operate in Prince William Sound and are based out of the Port of Whittier.
Prince William Sound is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and just a one-hour drive from Anchorage! The saltwater fishing here is second to none, and our halibut catch and possession limit is still 2 per day and 4 in possession of any size (southeast Alaska is now down to 1 halibut less than 37" per day).
M/V Sound Fun is large enough that everyone gets a soft-seat inside the cabin where it's always warm and dry. The marine head (toilet) is fully enclosed and private. She is eco-friendly using the latest 4-cycle engine technology.

All terminal tackle is hand-made by Roger. The twin circle-hook rigs with grub & skirt, double-hook hootchie rigs for salmon, and even the jig-heads with a grub/skirt have double hooks. Look at some of the gear on other fishing boats. Many use single hooks and save a little money by using less bait or tackle. We may spend a little more money on gear and go through a little more bait but we catch more fish!
Roger has been fishing out of Whittier since 2000. Prior to that time his marine experience included commercial and pleasure fishing the waters of Alaska's West coast including active membership with Kotzebue Search and Rescue. He has lived in Alaska since 1977, teaches high school in the off-season, and enjoys sharing his knowledge of Alaska and love for the outdoors.
Foreign visitors welcome! With notice we can provide a Japanese interpreter/deck-hand.
Come visit, we love making new friends!
